The New York Reproductive Health Act, which takes effect in January 2019, expands the ability of abortion providers and pregnant women to perform abortions at their own expense up to 24 weeks. The law requires abortion clinics to become outpatient surgical centers (ASCs), which are essentially mini-hospitals and requires that the doctor performing the abortion has admission privileges at a local hospital. The law amounts to a total ban on second-trimester abortions, as abortions are practically impossible in hospitals and no existing abortion clinic in the state offers them.

If your doctor suspects an incomplete abortion or ongoing pregnancy, you may need an ultrasound and possibly a surgical termination. For abortions between 15 weeks and 24 weeks, an abortion clinic requires a two-day procedure that involves removing the fetus from the uterus and introducing a surgical device. Some abortion clinics require ultrasound scans before you consider terminating your pregnancy to determine whether this type of procedure is recommended.

These sessions can take place several days before or after the termination, or they can take place at the end of the pregnancy or in the first days of pregnancy. These sessions can also be combined with other medical procedures such as ultrasound or surgical termination.
